Honesty Matters - We Owe It to Ourselves (and Others)

July 10, 20255 min read

I’ve been thinking all morning about whether I should write about this or not. Sometimes the things that feel most important to share are also the hardest to put into words. But if there’s one thing I keep coming back to, both in my work and in my life, it’s honesty.

There are moments in life when we’re faced with a choice: to be honest about what we feel and need, or to hold back and let things drift. I’ve learned that while honesty isn’t always easy, it’s the only way to build real connections with others and with ourselves. Sometimes, the most important things we say are the ones we never say out loud, but express through our actions and the boundaries we set.

Honesty is one of those things that sounds simple, but in real life, it’s anything but easy. There are times when we want to say what’s really on our minds, but we hold back, maybe to protect someone’s feelings, maybe to avoid conflict, or maybe because we’re not sure how to put it into words. But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that honesty is a gift. Not just to others, but to ourselves.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be honest, especially when it comes to connections that matter. Sometimes, we meet people who spark something in us. We feel a pull, a sense of possibility. But if we can’t be honest about what we want, or if the other person isn’t able to be truly open with us, it leaves us guessing and second-guessing. It’s hard to build something real on half-truths or silence.

For me, honesty isn’t about saying everything that comes to mind or being harsh. It’s about being clear with myself about what I need, what I’m looking for, and what I’m not willing to accept. It’s about having the courage to set boundaries, even when it’s uncomfortable. I’ve found that it’s better to be upfront about my feelings and expectations, rather than hoping things will change or that someone will just “get it.”

Sometimes, honesty means stepping back, even from something that feels special, if it’s not right or if the other person can’t meet me halfway. That’s not easy, and it’s not about blaming anyone. It’s about respecting myself and the other person enough to be real, even if it means letting go.

I believe we owe it to ourselves to be honest, even when it’s hard. And we owe it to the people we care about, too. Because real connection can only grow when both people are willing to show up as they are, without hiding or making excuses. If we can’t do that, it’s better to step back than to keep pretending.

This isn’t just something I’ve learned in my personal life; it’s just as important in my work. Running PhotocallShutter has shown me that being honest is what makes every partnership or project work. Whether I’m chatting with a new client, planning out a shoot, or sending over the final photos, I’ve realised it’s always better to be upfront about what’s possible, what isn’t, and what I need to do my best. That kind of openness builds trust and makes the whole process smoother for everyone involved.

There have been times when I’ve had to let a client know that a certain idea just wouldn’t work, or that a deadline needed to shift in order to keep the quality high. Those conversations can feel awkward in the moment, but in the end, people appreciate honesty. It sets the tone for a relationship built on trust, not just quick wins. I’ve found that the best projects are the ones where everyone feels safe to be open about what’s working, what isn’t, and what we want to achieve.

Honesty isn’t just about words, it’s about actions. It’s about showing up, being present, and not making excuses when things get difficult. Over time, I’ve realised that honesty builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any meaningful relationship, whether it’s with friends, family, partners, or clients.

Being honest sometimes means having tough conversations or making choices that feel uncomfortable in the moment. But in the long run, those moments create space for something real to grow, something based on mutual respect and understanding, not just wishful thinking or pretending everything is okay.

I’ve also learned that honesty is a two-way street. Just as I value being upfront with clients, I appreciate when they’re honest with me about their expectations, their feedback, or even when they change their mind about what they want. It saves time, avoids confusion, and helps us create work we’re both proud of.

One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that I tend to distance myself from people when I feel they’re not being honest with me. Sometimes I wonder if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. But the more I reflect on it, the more I see it as an act of self-respect. Life is too short to invest energy in relationships, personal or professional, where trust isn’t present. I’d rather give my time to people who value openness, even if it means having fewer connections overall. At the same time, I try to remember that everyone has their reasons. Sometimes people hold back out of fear or uncertainty, not because they want to be dishonest. I want to leave room for understanding, but I also know it’s important to protect my boundaries.

We all want to feel seen and understood, and that starts with being honest with ourselves about what we need.

Honesty isn’t always comfortable, but it’s what keeps our connections and our work real. I’m learning to choose it, even when it’s hard, because that’s where trust and growth begin.
