Drawing the Line

Drawing the Line: Honesty, Boundaries, and Real Connection

July 06, 20254 min read

It’s been a while since I last wrote here, so I want to take a moment to be open with you about where I’m at and what’s been on my mind. As someone who spends a lot of time behind the camera, capturing stories and emotions for others, I’ve found myself recently reflecting on the importance of genuine connection in my own life.

There’s something powerful about real, in-person moments. It’s easy to forget that in a world where so much of our communication happens through screens, messages, calls, comments, and likes. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the convenience and reach of digital connection. It’s allowed me to meet incredible people, collaborate on creative projects, and share my work with a wider audience than I ever thought possible. But at the end of the day, nothing compares to the energy of being in the same room with someone, sharing a laugh, or simply being present together. Those are the moments that stick with me, the ones that feel genuinely meaningful and real.

Lately, I’ve been reminded that I need those in-person experiences to truly feel connected and fulfilled. There’s a big difference between exchanging words on a screen and sharing experiences. For me, that’s where trust is built and where relationships, whether personal or professional.

Recently, I started building a connection with someone, and it felt genuinely promising. But as things unfolded, I realised that meeting up in person just wasn’t an option at this time. That experience made me reflect on how important real, face-to-face moments are to me. As much as I enjoy a good conversation online, I know I need those real-life experiences to truly feel connected and let things grow naturally.

I’ve also realised that it’s okay to acknowledge what I need and to set boundaries that feel right. That’s not about being selfish; it’s about being honest—with myself and with others. For me, being able to spend time together in person matters. If that’s not something that can happen, it just doesn’t feel right to keep moving forward, no matter how good things might seem online.

This reflection ties back to themes I’ve shared before on this blog: the value of time, the struggle to be present, and the challenge of staying true to ourselves in a world that’s always buzzing with distractions. It’s so easy to get caught up in digital conversations and let days slip by without truly connecting. But it’s those honest, in-person moments that shape us, that remind us what matters most.

Working in photography and videography has made this lesson even clearer for me. The most powerful images I capture are always the ones where people are truly present—caught up in the moment, not distracted by their phones or thinking about what’s next. Whether I’m shooting a commercial project, a candid street scene, or a quiet landscape, authenticity is what makes an image memorable. It’s the same with our relationships. When we show up fully—without hiding behind a screen or filtering our feelings—that’s when real connection happens.

I think about the people I’ve worked with, the clients who have trusted me to tell their stories, and the friends I’ve made along the way. The best collaborations always start with honesty and a willingness to be real, even if that means having uncomfortable conversations or drawing clear boundaries. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

If you’ve ever found yourself craving something real in a world that’s increasingly virtual, you’re not alone. We all need those face-to-face moments, those genuine interactions that remind us what it means to be human. Sometimes, being honest about what we need is the bravest thing we can do. It’s about protecting our energy, respecting our boundaries, and making space for the kind of experiences that fill us up.

As I return to writing and sharing here, I want to keep things real. This space isn’t just about business or creativity—it’s about the lessons, the challenges, and the moments that change us. I hope that by being open about my journey, it encourages you to think about your connections and what you genuinely need to feel fulfilled.

Let’s keep seeking out those genuine moments and meaningful conversations—on the screen and, even better, face-to-face.

Until next time,

Ruben
